Mens Training
How long would it take for an average person like me to train for the mens 1500m run? (Olympic Level)?
I'm 17, 6ft tall, 178lbs
I already run about 3 miles a day but my best mile is only a 5:48
It's not a question of how long it takes, it's a question of if you can get there.
If your best mile is 5:48 you've got your work cut out for you. Most world-class milers are recognized as pre-world-class material by the time they're your age. You need to get the right coaching, the right training, and the ability to make it into a competitive environment that will hone your racing abilities and skills. That stuff doesn't come naturally.
The best US prep miler in recent years was named Alan Webb. He is in fact the best prep miler in US history, he broke the US prep record held by Jim Ryun. He ran 3:53 in a race where Hicham El Guerrouj set the pace. But he didn't make the US team. Even he isn't Olympic level, yet. The United States hasn't had a gold in the olympic 1500 in the last 100 years, its last great hope was Steve Scott and its current great hope is Kenyan immigrant Bernard Lagat (who looked terrible in friday's heats)
Whatever country you're in, what you should do is join your school's track and cross-country teams, you may have to get a bit faster to make the team but you should be able to at least get on as a non-scorer. Then learn as fast as you can, put in the mileage and the work on your form and the intervals, and stay free of injuries, and get some races under your belt... if you've got your senior year ahead of you, you could be in scoring position by then, and if you can do well and make some invitational meets you might get a college scholarship... then you'll have a chance...
but after college, after all college training a miler really can't do without, you've got to keep it up by joining a track club, you probably will have to relocate to do that, and if you are dedicated enough you just might be like Nick Symmonds the former US collegian who leads the 800 entry. And might get a bronze if all hell breaks loose.
(the other way to train for the 1500 olympics is to be born in either North or East Africa, and spent most of your life at high altitude running 8 miles to school every day and herding cattle on foot. If you've already done this it may help you)
